Floorcare Guide

Caring for you new floors is easier than it sounds! With today’s advanced technology, decade-old floors can look like new—but only if they are cared for properly. Below is a how-to guide for cleaning and maintaining your different flooring materials. You can also call a LUX flooring specialist for advice on caring for your new floors.

Carpet and Rugs

The first step in maintaining a beautiful carpet is vacuuming; all carpets should be vacuumed at least twice a week. Loose particles in your carpet will, over time, rub and fray your carpet fibers; vacuuming often will ensure your carpet will last for years and years.

When cleaning spills or treating spots, take action as soon as possible.

  • Blot, do not rub the stain
  • use a carpet treatment only if you’ve tested it in an inconspicuous spot
  • rub, don’t blot
  • work from outside in
  • call a Lux flooring specialist for specific advice
Hardwood

Dirt, Grit, and sand are a hardwood floor’s worst enemies. Do your best to keep loose debris off of your ground by sweeping daily. Use a moist (not wet!) towel or a dust mop to remove the fine particles of dust from your hardwood. It’s these small particles that, when stepped on, will work away the finish on your floors.

Try your best to keep water away from your hardwood floors. If a liquid spill occurs, clean it immediately and make sure you dry between the boards as best you can.

For cleaning purposes, only use items specifically meant for wooden floors. Do not use harsh chemicals and make sure that any cleaner you use is of a neutral PH.

When vacuuming, use a machine with a brush attachment or turn the beater bar off. Beater bars will dent wooden floors (especially the softer woods, like maple).

Tile

Depending on the type of tile (ceramic, porcelain, stone, or vinyl) you have on your floors, caring for them will be a bit different. Call your Lux Flooring Specialist for details, but below are the basics of caring for your tiles:

  • Vacuum and/or sweep regularly to prevent dirt, grit, and sand from scratching your floors
  • Clean spill immediately to prevent staining natural products.
  • Never use oil soaps or waxy products on your floors.
  • Pickup, do not drag, furniture while moving
  • Use felt protectors for heavy pieces of furniture and chairs
